What is Video Production?

The term video production refers to the pre-production, filming, and post-production process of a video. It bears a close similarity to filmmaking, but with digitally recorded images as opposed to those on film stock.

The pre-production phase includes the production planning process such as administrative duties, logistics, scheduling, and scriptwriting. This phase includes obtaining signed, written legal documentation called releases that provide the producer the legal right to record and/or broadcast each person or animal used in the production. During the production phase, the production team and cast shoot the scenes of the video. This is typically done in asynchronous, rather than chronological, order. All scenes using a particular set would often get shot on the same day or in the same week to reduce travel. During the post-production phase, the scenes get edited together in chronological order of the script. As you probably know from films such as “Rashomon” and “Pulp Fiction” this does not mean that the actions in the video occur chronologically. The editing process simply puts them in the order of the script. This also entails sound overlay, audio mixing, and adding the soundtrack. Once complete, the edited video communicates a message or story.

Videography Equipment

The filming process uses a wide variety of videography equipment designed for both studio and location work. These equipment pieces include cameras, microphones, klieg lights, lighting gels, sound mixing boards, and much more.

Audio Video Production

The needed equipment also includes post-production software for audio mixing and for merging audio files with video files to create a cohesive single file that contains all of the relevant information. This audio-video production equipment generally includes more than one high-speed computer that can process graphics and large audio files. It patches into a digital audio mixing board that lets the audio engineer amplify or reduce the sound volume. Using an audio software and video editing software, the engineer can manipulate the sounds on the audio file, even changing their tone and pitch. Some programs contain features like auto-tune that change an imperfect pitch to a perfect one. This editing feature often gets used when musicians record an album or record a live video such as a concert.

Video Production Services

The undertaking of making a video requires a multitude of work. Just to make a short video advertisement requires months of work, if done by one person. For that reason, many people hire an agency that handles video production services. This full staff of individuals includes administrative staff, logistics, scriptwriters, researchers, directors, directors of photography, camerapersons, video editing personnel, etc. By hiring the production agency, a client hits the proverbial easy button to create their project

Production Agency

Bake More Pies is just such an agency. We handle all aspects of video production for you, the client. Our experience with video making and filming represents only one aspect of our diverse marketing capabilities

Objectives and Goals

We take care of the tough stuff that you probably have never needed to deal with before. First, we meet with you in person to interview you and determine your objectives for the video project. Once we can solidify your video objectives and the overarching goal of your video, we can set the SMART objectives. Just like any other marketing project, you need a goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound

Research Your Audience

We handle researching your target audience. Our staff learns their likes and dislikes through online and database research and big data. Knowing how they think helps determine the video content that appeals to them. Our approach goes far beyond demographics such as age, gender, and location

The Message

Your message needs to get your target audience to buy your product. It needs to make them think and feel amenable toward your brand or product so they believe that they cannot live without it and that there could be no replacement.

Your Video Strategy

Don’t confuse this with your objectives and goal. Your strategy defines how you achieve the objectives and goals. It includes your video content creation methods, how you plan to reach your target audience, distribute the video, how you will re-air the video to improve return on investment (ROI) and how to do that within budget and deadline. This is how Bake More Pies can help because we create marketing campaigns every day.

The Production Brief

Our last step before scripting is the creation of a video production brief. The brief or guide provides a step-by-step production plan. It includes the video goal and objectives, the target audience plus the audience insights, and what you want their reaction to the video to be. This document also includes the succinct message of the video, the budget, and the deadline.

Develop the Creative Approach

After the brief, we develop the creative approach the video will take. We brainstorm the ideas based upon your input, then bounce a few off of you. You choose from these video concepts or have us develop more. This approach develops an idea that engages your target audience while selling them on your product.

Scriptwriting

After all of that, it is time to write the script. We handle that, too. Your production agency should do the work of video pre-production, production, and post-production. As the client, your only work is to choose which option you like best.

The script the agency creates needs to read well and seem natural and normal. It needs the human touch, providing an interesting story with positive emotion. Videos, especially advertisements, should interest the target audience with an easy to understand the message. You deliver the informative message in a concise, short manner that sounds good when read aloud. The script should include pertinent details like location descriptions, props, characters, their description, and their actions to accompany their lines.

The Storyboard

We storyboard the video for you. This refers to drawing sketches of each scene as it will be shoot on video. It helps the director and producers visualize the script. It typically shows each shot of the project.

Shooting Schedule

We create the plan and schedule for the video shoot. This part includes the hiring of the actors and actresses and scouting and scheduling locations if shooting does not occur on a soundstage. Bake More Pies assembles the production crew, too. We provide the equipment and procure costumes, plus acquire the appropriate permissions and licenses. Finally, we create the call sheet, and we ready everything for production.

Shoot the Footage

During the shooting process, the video producer and director work together to ensure a smooth process that puts the needed scenes on video that efficiently tell the story. They ensure this gets done without needing multiple takes of each scene on location or in-studio. The client serves as the executive video producer since they are the individual or firm that pays for the project.

Postproduction

In post-production, your production personnel splices together the video clips using video editing software. This video editing process provides all the needed scenes to tell the story as succinctly as possible in a way that makes it easy to follow the storyline. If the video is an advertisement, it will include a call to action (CTA) to get your target audience to take action.
